[kɪrɪs'maːs], früher Christmas Island ['krɪsməs 'aɪlənd, englisch], Weihnachts|insel, eine der nördlichen Linieninseln, Kiribati, im Westen des Pazifischen Ozeans, Atoll von 575 km2 (Landfläche: 388 km2), 2 500 Einwohner; Kokospalmenplantagen; Flugplatz; Naturschutzgebiet für Vögel. - Am 24. 12. 1777 von James Cook entdeckt; 1856 von den USA beansprucht, seit 1888 zu Großbritannien (seit 1919 als Teil der Kronkolonie Gilbert and Ellice Islands), seit 1936 zwischen den USA und Großbritannien umstritten, 1956-62 Operationsbasis für amerikanische und britische Kernwaffenversuche; seit 1979 Teil von Kiribati.
